Ottawa, ON – June 5, 2018 – Tonight, Members of Parliament, Senators, dignitaries and guests will gather on Parliament Hill to celebrate the third annual ‘Canada-Italy Day on the Hill.’ The evening will feature Italian food, drink, performances, and will celebrate the continuing contributions Italian Canadians have made to our country’s national fabric.
Francesco Sorbara, Member of Parliament for Vaughan-Woodbridge and Chair of the Canada-Italy Interparliamentary Group, will give brief opening remarks on Canada’s relationship with Italy and the shared values of democracy, social justice, and gender equality both in Canada and in Italy. Italy’s Ambassador to Canada, His Excellency Claudio Taffuri, and the Hon. Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship will also address the hundreds who will be in attendance on the significant relationship that these two countries share.
Following the success of the previous two events, this year’s celebration will include performances by Carlo Coppola and Rita Sensoli, fan-favourite gelato from Gelatini Gelato and desserts from Pasticceria gelateria italiana, wine from Magnotta Wineries and delicious Italian cuisine catered from Sala San Marco. Canada-Italy Day on the Hill falls immediately after Festa Della Repubblica, June 2nd, and occurs during Italian Heritage Month, which was declared official following unanimous support in the House of Commons in May 2017.
In addition to Canada-Italy Day on the Hill, MP Sorbara attended additional events marking Italian Heritage Month including the Italian National Day at Casaloma, Festa della Repubblica Italiana 2018, hosted by Federazione Nazionale Agricoltura, and the Italian Heritage Month Flag Raising at the City of Vaughan.
“As the annual Canada-Italy Day on the Hill event continues to grow, I am honoured to be able to share Italian culture with friends and colleagues, and I am grateful to be part of the growing Italian community in this country. As the relationship between Canada and Italy continues to expand, I am proud that on a smaller scale we are able to celebrate the contributions which Italian-Canadians continue to make to culture and the arts, public service and business here in Canada,” – Francesco Sorbara, Member of Parliament for Vaughan-Woodbridge
“Every year, Members of Parliament across the country organize Canada-Italy Day on the Hill to launch Italian Heritage Month. It is no secret that Italians are so much more than good food and a great sense of fashion – they undoubtedly brought a new cosmopolitanism to Canadian life. The Italian population’s dynamism and sense of community spirit is one like no other. I am proud to be part of such a vibrant community,” -David Lametti, Member of Parliament for LaSalle-Émard-Verdun
