As Chair of the Canada-Italy Interparliamentary Group as well as an Italian-Canadian, it is with great pride to see the passage of Motion-64 that recognizes June as Italian Heritage Month in Canada. The Motion was passed unanimously in the House of Commons on May 17, 2017.
The Motion was tabled by Deborah Schulte MP for King Vaughan, with full support of the Canada-Italy Interparliamentary Group and the Italian-Canadian MPs from all parties. We all thank MP Schulte for tabling the motion – Grazie mille.
“It is exciting for all MPs to be part of a historic motion as it recognizes the vast, rich and deep contributions of Italian-Canadians to the story of Canada, and it is only fitting that this recognition occurs in unison with Canada’s 150 birthday celebration.”
MP Francesco Sorbara, Chair of the Canada-Italy Interparliamentary Group.
Motion M-64 states: That in opinion of the house, the government should recognize the contributions that Italian-Canadians have made to Canadian society, the richness of the Italian language and culture, and the importance of educating and reflecting upon Italian heritage for future generations by declaring June, every year, Italian Heritage Month. Italian Heritage Month was declared in Ontario in 2010, with the passing of Bill 103, Italian Heritage Month.
The Canada-Italy Interparliamentary Group in conjunction with the Italian Embassy will hold the second annual Canada-Italy Day on the Hill on June 6th which will celebrate Festa della Repubblica and Italian-Heritage Month.
